Google Pixel Fold: Premium Look with Fast Performance



With the Pixel Fold, Google has produced a genuine rival with a cutting-edge design that directly tackles some of Samsung's shortcomings in the market. Google's first premium foldable phone is therefore a noteworthy opponent even though its $1,799 pricing will be unaffordable for the majority of consumers. Google Pixel Fold Display & Design

The Google Pixel Fold has two 120Hz OLED screens, each measuring 5.8 inches on the outside and opening to expose a flexible 7.6 inches within. On paper, it appears to be very similar to what Samsung provides with the Z Fold 4, but Google has tinkered with the phone's construction and size to produce what may be the finest demonstration of the company's design prowess to date. Google picked a wider 17.4:9 aspect ratio for the Pixel Fold's 2,092 x 1,080 outside display, creating a gadget that resembles a passport more than something like Samsung's slimmer baton-like design. The advantage is that you won't have to flip as frequently to the larger interior screen. And although this adjustment can appear insignificant, it has a significant impact.

Google's Tensor G2 processor, 12GB of RAM, and up to 512GB of storage power the Pixel Fold. The Fold occasionally runs a touch warm, just like many have seen with previous Pixel smartphones, and its pace isn't overwhelming. The fact that Samsung was unable to achieve the same degree of visual quality that you get on the Galaxy S Ultra is one of my main complaints with the Z Fold 4. The Pixel Fold, though, doesn't feel as weakened. A 48MP primary sensor, a 10.8MP ultrawide sensor, and a 10.8MP telephoto sensor with a 5x optical zoom are all included. While there wasn't much of a difference in overall longevity between the Z Fold 4's 4,400 mAh battery and Google's 4,820 mAh battery, it's still rather impressive. I used both of their internal and external monitors to do our video rundown test. The Pixel Fold outlasted Samsung's large foldable on the former, clocking it at 22 hours and 21 minutes as opposed to 20:45. However, the Z Fold 4 outperformed the Pixel with a time of 17:13 as opposed to 15:42 because of their bigger displays.


Bottom Line

As many of its functions, including dual-window multitasking, are already present on smartphones like the Z Fold 4, some people would argue that the Pixel Fold isn't truly expanding the overall capabilities of flexible phones. But perhaps most significantly, Google now has a tool at its disposal to help it mold Android's future beyond standard glass bricks.
