Nokia G42: Slim & Lightweight Smartphone

The Nokia G42, now available in Australia, continues HMD Global's work in developing phones that you can fix yourself, contributing to a more sustainable digital economy. It also has a lovely purple color and supports a 5G connection. It's a more robust follow-up to the G22, released earlier this year in partnership with the worldwide repair organization iFixit. Notably, the new Nokia G42 runs Android 13 and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480+ 5G CPU, both upgrades over the G22.

Nokia G42 Design & Display

Regarding the phone's construction, an IP52 classification suggests that it should withstand the elements pretty well as long as it is not submerged in water. It's your typical glass rectangle with a plastic frame and back. The materials used keep the weight low, and plastic has two distinct benefits over other materials: it is less prone to slip off a surface and can withstand falls better than metal or glass. For display, it features several intriguing downgrades when compared to the competition. Its refresh rate is adequate at 90Hz, though some competitors offer 120Hz, but its resolution is a tad low at 720p.

Nokia G42 Performance

HMD Global's newest phone comes in an appealing So Purple color and has a slightly bigger 6.56-inch 720 x 1612 resolution display that operates at 90Hz. It has 6GB of RAM, which is more than the G22's 4GB, so it should be speedier and more powerful in every manner. The phone brings several new features but needs more storage space. You can increase it by using a photos remover app such as Smart Transfer that can help to detect and erase duplicate files with just a few taps. The other enhancements include Bluetooth 5.1 connection and two microphones to allow OZO 3D audio capture. Surprisingly, the better features come at a minor environmental cost, with the Nokia G42 back cover built from just 65% recycled plastic, compared to 100% recycled plastic in the G22.

Nokia G42 Camera Specs

  • Nokia G42 sensor configuration: 3 years, 1 front

  • Rear: 50MP f/1.8 primary sensor, 2MP depth, 2MP macro

  • Front: 8MP fixed focus resolution

Summary

The Nokia G42, currently available in So Purple and Grey colors, costs $449 and comes with 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. Nokia's G42 5G is one of the few smartphones developed with repairability in mind, and the latest features are regarded as a further perk. Remember to buy it from Nokia's e-store.
